UC Santa Cruz Genomics Institute graduate student Jordan Eizenga has been named a Koret Scholar mentor for 2018. Eizenga will mentor UCSC undergraduate mathematics student Kavin Subramanyam, whose project is titled “Effective Markov Sampling in Pan-Genome Graphs for Genome Inference.”
Eizenga is a PhD student in the Computational Biology and Bioinformatics program and is a graduate student researcher at the UC Santa Cruz Genomics Institute’s Computational Genomics Laboratory. He completed his undergraduate in mathematics and political science at the University of Michigan in 2011. He later became interested in biology and computer science and spent two years studying them in open online courses before starting at UCSC in 2015. His current research interests include nanopore sequencer informatics and using graph structures to represent population genomic variation.
The Koret Scholars Program provides funding for a variety of undergraduate research projects and experiences. The program supports scholarships for undergraduate research projects with faculty and graduate student mentors, undergraduate and graduate student research internships with the Student Success Evaluation and Research Center, and expansion of the year-long College Scholars research development program. Koret Scholars are expected to work with their mentors in 2- or 5-credit independent studies. Koret Undergraduate Research Scholarships are intended to enable students to participate in a research project outside of their courses in collaboration with faculty and/or graduate students.
